The Infocom text adventure game, Zork 1 was one of the first interactive fiction games that allowed users to control their own destiny. Zork, just like Spacewar! was developed by young enthusiasts at MIT.
Zork was written for a DEC PDP-10 mainframe computer that was much more powerful than any home computer at that time. And of course, the PDP-10 was very large and much too expensive for any home user. The original Zork for the PDP-10 consisted of what is now known as the Zork 'trilogy' of Zork 1, Zork 2 & Zork 3. But after the founding of Infocom and the intention of releasing it to home computer enthusiasts, it was immediately apparent that the memory limitations of home computer systems would not be able to accommodate all three. Hence, the game was broken into the three parts we now know.
There's plenty more history about Infocom and Zork. But today, here's the first section of Zork 1 along with some Artificial Intelligence addons. Namely images from both Micrsoft's Designer and Google's Gemini. The voice is AI generated from Microsoft's Clipchamp giving spoken word to the adventure. So, here's the second peek into a complete walkthrough. More to follow.
